Entrance Requirements

 

Graduate Program - General Entrance Requirements

 

Physics Undergraduate Degree 
To be admitted to graduate status, the basic requirement is a bachelor's degree in Physics or its equivalent from an accredited institution. This degree must represent the completion of a program equivalent both in the distribution of academic subject matter and scholarship achievement comparable to that offered at the University of California. Qualified applicants are expected to have a junior/senior GPA of 3.25 or higher.
Students with Degrees in other subjects
Majors other than physics may also be considered. These will be treated on a case-by-case basis.
General and Physics GRE scores 
The General and Physics Subject GRE are not required for admission to our graduate program. Our ETS codes for the general GRE is R4839 (UCR) and for the Physics Subject GRE 0808 (Physics).
TOEFL Examination
International applicants are also required to take the TOEFL examination as part of the pre-qualification process for financial support. The scores should be submitted directly from ETS and should have a test date no older than two years from the intended date of enrollment at UCR.

Qualified applicants should have a minimum score of either 550 from the paper-based test or 80 from the internet based test (iBT). Ranges 540-550 / 75-80 may also be considered.

Letters of Reference 
Applicants should arrange for 3 letters of reference to be submitted directly to the Graduate Admissions in the Dept. of Physics.
