  • Assistant Professor position in the fields of Neutrino Physics, Particle Astrophysics, Cosmology and Gravitational Waves

    The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of California invites highly qualified experimental physicists to apply for an academic-year tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in the fields of Neutrino Physics, Particle Astrophysics, Cosmology and Gravitational Waves. We have recently made new faculty appointments in experimental gravitational waves, experimental dark matter searches, and cosmic microwave background observations. This appointment will complement them.


    The position has an anticipated start date of July 1, 2024. Candidates should possess a record of demonstrated excellence in research. The successful candidate is expected to establish an outstanding and well-funded research program involving graduate students and postdoctoral scientists, and to contribute to departmental teaching at all levels. We are seeking an independent researcher, who will build a significant on-campus research effort on the forefront of an experimental program in this general area of physics that will complement existing programs in our department.


    The current 9-month base pay range is $74,600 to $97,200. Additional compensation may include summer salary from research grant funds. Other components of pay are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.


    Candidates for this position are required to have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in physics or a related field. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications.

  • Postdoc Position in Theoretical Soft Condensed Matter and Computational Biophysics

    We invite applications for a postdoc position in theoretical and computational soft condensed matter and biophysics in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at UC Riverside working with Professor Roya Zandi. As part of the Zandi group, the candidate will have the opportunity to work collaboratively on a variety of projects including elasticity theory of two-dimensional surfaces, virus assembly and formation, conformations of RNA and other polyelectrolytes in confined regions, motor-driven intracellular transport, heterogeneous active matter and fluctuation-induced (Casimir) forces in various systems.  

    The position is part of a multidisciplinary, multi-campus effort connected to the established UC Consortium on Coronavirus Research.  The primary goal of the group is to elucidate the mechanisms of the assembly of coronaviruses using analytical theory and computer simulation.  The postdoc will work closely with Roya Zandi at UC Riverside in collaboration with Ajay Gopinathan (UC Merced) and Patrice Koehl (UC Davis). The postdoc will also work closely with the experimentalists on three campuses to develop theory and numerical simulation for the design, analysis, and interpretation of relevant experiments. The position comes with multiple opportunities for professional development and meaningful mentorship, outreach and community engagement.

  • Experimental Postdoctoral Position in Electron-Positron Plasmas

    The Positronium Science Group at UCR is looking for a qualified person to fill an experimental Postdoctoral Scholar position. Qualified candidates will have received a Ph.D. in plasma physics or a related field and have a demonstrated background in experimental plasma science. The Postdoctoral position involves (1) the creation of quasi-neutral electron-positron plasmas inside a cavity buried in a solid, (2) development of time-resolved diagnostics to characterize density and temperature of the evolving electron-positron plasmas. The Postdoctoral scholar will have access to a unique positron source delivering >10 million positrons per pulse in a small spot to load the buried cavity with positrons as well as copious secondary electrons created during the positron implantation and stopping process. We seek applicants with demonstrated laboratory, technical, and software expertise. Experience with microwave diagnostics is a plus but early work will concentrate on more easily characterized plasma densities with plasma frequencies <500 MHz.  The responsibilities of this position will include experimental efforts, analysis of data using advanced numerical techniques, writing and publishing results in scientific journals, and oral presentations of results. This work will be performed under the supervision of faculty in the UCR Physics and Astronomy Department who are experts in positron science and time-resolved optical probes of matter. Work will take place onsite at UCR.   • Assistant Project Scientist in Nuclear/Particle Physics

    The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of California invites applicants for a full-time Assistant Project Scientist to conduct applied research for the Arratia Lab in Riverside, CA. This position will start on 1/1/2024. The purpose of this position is to perform research and coordinate work performed within the EIC California consortium with the goal to maximize its impact and find new ways to collaborate. Propose original ways in which detectors can be optimized. These results of this research will be published by the candidate in papers. The final candidate will assist Postdoctoral researchers, students, and Visiting Scholars at UCR.

    The current base pay range for this position is $71,500 to $91,000 annually.


    Basic qualifications for this position that must be met by the date of application include: Ph.D. in Physics, demonstrated skills in Experimental Nuclear Physics/Particle Physics. 3 years of experience post PhD.
    Preferred qualifications for this position include: Demonstrated knowledge in EIC related physics and R&D, outstanding work ethics, supervisory experience, and prior scientific publications.   • Sr. Contract & Grant Analyst 3

    The Department of Physics & Astronomy is seeking a Sr. Contract & Grant Analyst 3 to assist principal investigators (PIs) with pre- and post-award administration of contracts and grants. Under general direction from the Financial Operations Manager, the incumbent will provide leadership and high-level technical support for the proposal submission process and post-award fund administration. This support will include developing a broad foundation of sponsor and university policies. The incumbent will work with a variety of federal and some non-federal sponsors including NSF, NASA, and the Department of Energy, and will be responsible for proposals and awards of diverse scope. This includes analysis of data thorough understanding of complex regulations and guiding principal investigators in the management of their funds. Proposals and awards may involve multi-collaborative and multi-institutional stakeholders as well as communicating effectively among various departments on campus to ensure timely submission of reports, payroll requests, and grant proposals. The Department of Physics & Astronomy supports 45 faculty and includes 203 non-senate academics, postdocs, graduate students, and administrative staff; $20.8 million dollars per year in expenditures and $10M in extramural funding administered over 148 discreet fund sources. The full salary range for the Sr. Contract and Grant Analyst is $64,300.00 - $114,300.00 annually. However, the expected pay scale for this position is $64,300.00 - $83,500.00 annually. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.   • Senior Level Faculty Position in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics

    The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of California, Riverside (https://www.physics.ucr.edu/) invites applications for one tenured appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2025.

    Candidates must possess a PhD in Physics; preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated record of outstanding research in Condensed Matter Physics with an emphasis on quantum materials and devices. Successful candidates should have a proven track record of establishing an outstanding and well- funded research program involving students and postdoctoral scientists in forefront areas of quantum materials and devices, including but not limited to, synthesis of quantum materials in the form of bulk crystals or thin films and heterostructures, and experimental study of novel physical properties of nanoscale electronic devices. This senior appointment is expected to complement our existing strength in the areas of spintronics, 2D-materials, nanoelectronics, and related fields, actively collaborate with the condensed matter theory faculty in our department and materials science and engineering faculty across the campus and organize multi-principal investigator research teams for extramural funding. The appointment is also expected to support the training of students of diverse backgrounds and teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels. UCR has excellent infrastructures to support cutting-edge materials science research such as recently expanded and upgraded cleanrooms for nanofabrication and various state-of-the-art microanalysis tools and microscopes housed in several shared central facilities. 

    The UC salary consists of a base pay range of $92,500-$116,600 for Associate Professors, a base pay range of $108,300-197,100 for Full Professors and additional off-scale to be commensurate with market value, qualifications and experiences. The off-scale portion of the salary will be maintained as long as satisfactory academic progress is made. Additionally, the off-scale will be maintained subject to market adjustments to the UC salary scale.

  • Assistant Professor in Soft Condensed Matter/Biological Physicists
    Tenure Track Faculty Position in Experimental Biophysics
